As you begin your college search, it is likely that you have heard of something called an alumni association. In this article, I hope to clarify what that term refers to and how it can be beneficial information in your search for the right college.
An alumni association is comprised of graduate students and adults who have previously attended that educational institution and have decided to maintain connections with that community. In addition to educational institutions, fraternities and sororities as well as other organizations, can also have alumni associations. Within these associations, members usually organize social gatherings and fundraise for the university, college, or organization it is affiliated with.
How Does This Affect You?
Current students are often invited to attend these social events, providing them with the chance to gain additional insight into the life of a recent graduate. These gatherings can provide current students with the perfect platform to network and connect with moguls who work in their intended industry of study. Not only can this valuable information result in a competitive edge, but it can also help students gain work opportunities, such as internships or fellowships. In other words, alumni associations can provide students with another resource to gain valuable career information from people who have experienced it first-hand.
Alumnae are typically enthusiastic about the school they have attended and are therefore, are eager to support current students in any way they can. For prospective students, gaining the chance to interact with recent graduates can help determine if that is the educational institution the student is actually interested in. Lastly, alumnae associations can often reflect the larger culture of the school, providing prospective students a chance to hear about personal experiences and gain additional insight.
