Money Mentor Interview with Dana Marvin!

Hey everyone! I’m Dana, and I attend State University of New York at Oneonta! I’ve been a Money Mentor with NextGenVest for over a year, and I love helping students out every day! Here’s a little bit more about me!

Dana

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in a small town called Wappingers Falls, New York (very close to Poughkeepsie for reference). Currently I live in Yonkers, New York, which is super close to New York City! I’m a professional transfer student, as I have attended four colleges in my college career. I started at Mount Saint Mary College, then Dutchess Community College, then Westchester Community College, then fell in love and stayed at SUNY Oneonta! Please feel free to ask me any questions you have about transferring colleges and the adjustment process!

What did you do in High School?

I was that over-achiever, had to fit everything into a tight schedule type of kid once sophomore year started! I joined my high school drama club in the Hair Crew, and by junior year I was the crew chief in charge of most of the hair for all the drama club shows. I was a tutor for students with disabilities and a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club. At the time I was into business classes, so I was part of the Business and Marketing Honors Society as well as a member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). During my senior year, I took third place in Business Law in the local FBLA competition, and attended the state competition in Rochester, NY. I stayed super busy, but I loved every minute of it!

What do you like about your college?

My favorite part of SUNY Oneonta is that it is such a diverse campus. Even with it’s small size, there are over 120 different clubs to choose from, meaning tons of different types of people you have the opportunity to meet.

What’s your major?

I am a psychology major with a minor in criminal justice! Eventually I would like to move on to graduate school for criminological psychology or forensic psychology (which are basically the same but different program names).

What do you do in at your college?

Just like in high school, I’m overwhelmingly busy with clubs and activities. Along with my job with NextGenVest, I am a tour guide for my college. I am the Editor-in-Chief for the Oneonta chapter of Odyssey, an online news website where college students are given the chance to gain amazing experience in journalism while voicing their opinions. I am the Executive Board Secretary for three different clubs: Campus National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Hall Government for Higgins Hall (that’s my residence halls, getting Higgy with it!), and the Class of 2017 Student Government.

Is there anything in particular you want your mentees to know?

Please know that I’m SO excited to talk with you and help you through this process of going to college! I gotchuu, and I promise I’ll be here every step of the way! Never hesitate to hit me up so I can help!
