Money Mentor Interview with Ashlyn Strahley!

Hi everyone! My name is Ashlyn Strahley. I attend the University of Findlay in Northwest Ohio. The following are some fun facts about me!

Where Are Your From?

I'm from a small rural town in northwest Ohio, about an hour away from my college. Although I was born in the Hoosier State, I've pretty much been a Buckeye my entire life! Even the though the miles and miles of cornfields get boring sometimes, I still love it here. There's such a big sense of community and family here that I wouldn't trade for anything.

What Did You Do in High School?

In high school, I was kinda geeky. I was on the quiz bowl team, and had lots of fun being a part of the team. I was also President of our school’s National Honor Society, which was another great experience. I learned tons of leadership and organizational skills in this role. Along with that I was a constant volunteer in my town, spearheading a program entitled Blessings In a Bag for National Honor Society. This program provided food over weekends to children from households with low income.

What Do You Like About Your College?

There are so many things I love about my college, but it would take all day to list them so I'll just name a few of my favorites. Number one: the quality of education. This is really important no matter where you go, and Findlay is top notch at this. Number two: so many opportunities. There are so many opportunities to join clubs and find internships here it's insane. Number three: the small, family-like feel. Coming from a small town this was essential for me, and once again Findlay is great for this.

What is Your Major?

I’m an accounting major. Now, I know what you're thinking. Math, numbers, boring stuff. But if math and numbers are your jam like they are for me, it's actually kinda cool! You can do a lot of things with an accounting degree. For me, I'm planning on becoming a CPA, and then probably working with some sort of small CPA firm.

What Do You Do At Your College?

In college, I am an active member of the accounting club. We really strive to make a difference on campus. I’m also in my university’s choir! I’ve been singing for years, in choirs and on my own, but being in the university’s choir takes it to the next level. I have learned so much, and I’ve had fun singing, which is one of my passions.

What Do You Want Your Mentees to Know?

Don’t be afraid to speak! This advice is twofold. One, if you speak up in class, and show you know the material or are curious about it, the more likely your professor is to notice you and the easier it will be to form a bond with them. Two, if you don’t speak up, you won’t make as many friends! Put yourself out there. Every freshman is in the same boat. If you’re a quiet person like me, push yourself to be more outgoing. You’ll be grateful in the long run!
